Warren County to graduate first full class from new building

By Kim Walter -- kwalter@ndaily.com

Warren County High School's Class of 2012 is a special one, in that it's the first group of students to graduate after coming to the new building five years ago when they were in eighth grade.

The 184 seniors will receive their diplomas in Wildcat Stadium at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Class President Sam Catalani's speech touches on the fact that the class has hit the milestone of having a full five years together, and that it deserves celebration. However, he challenges his classmates as well.

"We all have potential," he says. "I challenge you to be the best you can be. Look beyond today, look beyond our graduation ceremony and celebration and look beyond tomorrow."

While the school does not designate a valedictorian or salutatorian, the top male and female students were recognized and will receive the Carl and Emily Thompson Charitable Trust Fund in the amount of $3,000.

Jacob Sheppard is the top male, and will attend the University of Virginia in the fall. Mariah Bacon, heading to Georgia Tech, and Leanna Eisenman, enrolled at William and Mary, tied for the top female academic winner.

Nearly 40 students will graduate with honors, meaning they finished the year with a GPA between 3.5 and 3.999, while 16 students earned a GPA higher than 4.0. Honors students will wear maroon and silver cords, and the Distinguished Honors students will wear maroon and gold cords with their robes.

Two students, Patricia Thompson and James Blankenship, will enter the Armed Services after graduation. Thompson is going to the U.S. Air National Guard, and Blankenship will join the US Marines.

As a whole, the class was awarded $1,195,270 in scholarships from colleges, local organizations and the high school.

If it rains Tuesday evening, the ceremony will take place at the scheduled time, but in the gym and auditorium.
