Front Royal businesses and shoppers can get rewarded

A Front Royal-Warren County business association is continuing its "Independents Week" celebration.

The Front Royal Independent Business Alliance, which formed late last winter, is continuing its "Independents Week Sale-abration" through Saturday, although businesses are rewarding shoppers throughout July.

The event began Monday with a week-long cash mob -- akin to a flash mob, but featuring shoppers going en masse from store to store to help out local businesses. By paying in cash, mobsters help merchants avoid transaction fees that come with credit cards.

Shoppers can download bingo cards from the Front Royal Cash Mob Facebook page and get them stamped at participating businesses.

A row of four stores, or four corners is a bingo, and leads to one prize entry, and a coverall brings 10 entries, said Meghan Moeslein, who runs the Second Chance thrift store and is the FRIBA event committee chairwoman.

"This is the longest running cash mob that I've ever heard of," she said.

Both the Warren County Board of Supervisors and the Front Royal Town Council have proclaimed July 1 to 7 Independents Week, according to Moeslein.

The week has been "fabulous," she said.

"All first time events in the county can go one of two ways," Moeslein said. "They could either really, really succeed, or they can completely flop."

Independent Front Royal businesses have seen the former, she said.

"This is a great week for our community to recognize and support all of our local independent businesses," FRIBA Steering Committee member Craig Laird states in the release. "Almost 90 percent of the businesses in Warren County are small businesses, and many of those are local indies. So get out there and join us in buying local and putting your money where your house is."

FRIBA is up to more than 60 members, and is growing daily, according to Moeslein.

Shoppers can also get a chance to win prizes all month, she said.

According to the FRIBA website, among the prizes are pearls from Foster's Jewelers, a free river trip from Skyline Canoe Co., and gift certificates from various businesses, including The Apple House, Page Master Books, The Kiln Doctor, Old Timers Antiques and tje Warren County Veterinary Clinic. FRIBA is also sponsoring a "Dine-Local Mini-Quest" on Saturday.

"No purchase is necessary, but it is possible to enjoy a progressive meal by sampling as you go," a release from the organization states.

Completed quest cards can be turned in for a chance to win $25 in restaurant coupons.

Quest cards are available at the Front Royal Visitor's Center, 414 E. Main St. For more information, visit discoverfrontroyal.com/page.cfm/cat/123.
