For the second year, Dr. Matthew Karen, of Exclusively Faces Cosmetic Surgery and Medisap in Winchester, has been awarded the President's Volunteer Service Award for giving more than 100 hours of volunteer service to the Winchester area.

The President's Council on Service and Civic Participation partners with more than 80 leadership organizations and more than 28,000 certifying organizations to bestow more than 1.5 million awards to the nation's deserving volunteers.

For two years in a row, 2010 and 2011, Karen has volunteered over 200 hours of his time to the Laurel Center of Winchester. The Laurel Center provides services to women who have experienced domestic and sexual violence. Karen sits on the board of directors for the center and has hosted the annual 5k Walk for Women, which in 2010 raised over $7,000 and in 2011 raised over $8,000 to benefit the Laurel Center.

Connie Richards, clinical counselor at Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal, earned a Ph.D. in psychology with a specialization in teaching from Walden University in May.

Richards' dissertation was entitled, "The Relationship Between Optimistic Explanatory Style and Doctoral Study Completion."

R-MA, founded in 1892, is a college-preparatory, coeducational day and boarding school for students in grades six through 12.


Edward Jones Financial of Strasburg will be hosting a Planning for Retirement Income seminar on July 18 at 9 a.m. at Cristina's Café, located at 219 West King St. in Strasburg.

The guest speaker will be Sean Grabriel, the Regional Vice President of the Independent Planners Channel of Pacific Life. Refreshments will be provided.

New Member

On June 21, the Board of Directors of F&M Bank Corp appointed Larry A. Caplinger to the board of directors as a new member. F&M is the parent company which operates Farmers & Merchants Bank.

Caplinger has been an employee of Farmers & Merchants Bank since 1972 and has held various positions with the bank over his career. He currently serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Lending Officer of the company.

Caplinger is a native of Rockingham County and currently resides in Broadway with his wife Angie.
