Lightning knocks out signal in Front Royal

Lightning struck and damaged traffic signal equipment at Royal and Commerce avenues in Front Royal early Monday morning and town officials warn motorists may experience delays at the major intersection.
Crews with the Department of Energy Services worked through the morning to install new equipment but the town requires additional devices in order for the signals to function fully by video detection, according to the alert issued by Front Royal. The department expects delivery of the equipment on July 17.
Until the town receives the equipment the department must operate the signals on a timed pattern to allow flow in all directions, according to the alert.
Also, the traffic signal for right turns from Commerce Avenue to Royal Avenue will remain red until the new equipment is installed, the alert states. The town advises motorists to continue north from Commerce Avenue after stopping for the red light.
Contact the town at 635-8007 with any questions about the issue.
