Massanutten wildfire reported 85 percent contained

Daily staff report

The U.S. Forest Service reported Thursday that the Point 2 wildfire that has been ravaging the George Washington and Jefferson forest lands on Massanutten Mountain has been 85 percent contained.

Michael Williams, a spokesman for the Forest Service, said five fire crews and two squads of firefighters extinguished the last of smoldering materials within 40 feet of the fire line Thursday. Firefighters backed by helicopters dropping water to slow the fire's progress also completed burnout operations Thursday, Williams said. Smoke will continue to be seen over the area Friday, he said.

Firefighters conducted the burnout operation in an effort to destroy fuels in the northwest corner of the fire, which encompassed 1,194 acres in Warren and Shenandoah counties as of Thursday.

The Forest Service also reported that the Neighbor Mountain wildfire east of Luray in Page County had been 67 percent contained as of 4 p.m. Thursday. The fire covered 2,138 acres, according to the Forest Service.
