A former Shenandoah County resident made his initial appearance in U.S. District Court Thursday after being accused of selling methamphetamine in Shenandoah County.
The defendant, Jose Payan, was scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing at 11 a.m. Monday before U.S. Magistrate Judge James G. Welsh, according to online court records.
Welsh also ordered Payan held in detention pending his trial. The court records state Welsh issued the order after Payan stated he was not seeking release from custody.
An affidavit filed in late June by Sgt. Jason Clark of the Northwest Virginia Regional Drug Task Force states that he learned through a confidential informant of someone selling large amounts of methamphetamine in Shenandoah County, a suspect later identified by another informant as Payan.
