Dollar General's new Mt. Jackson store opening next week

Even after this weekend's Shenandoah County Yard Crawl is over, bargains should remain bountiful in Mt. Jackson.

A Dollar General is expected to open some time next week at at 5160 Main St., just north of the current store at 5312 Main St.

Mt. Jackson Town Manager Clark Draper said Tuesday that the store was trying to open Saturday, which is the same day as the county-wide yard sale along U.S. 11, but later on Tuesday, Dollar General spokeswoman Emily Weiss said the opening likely wouldn't be that day.

"They're moving from their current location in the shopping center out to their standalone building," Draper said.

Draper said Dollar General was granted a special-use permit by the town this spring. The site was already zoned for business, but town code requires a special-use permit for stores that are larger than 3,000-square feet, he said.

The new store is 9,000-square feet, according to Draper.

"They were telling us it was one of the biggest Dollar Generals on the East Coast," he said.

The old store is about 7,200-square feet, according to Weiss.

"We're always re-evaluating our stores and how we can better serve our customers," she said. "It will also feature a newer, fresher layout. For example, when you walk into the store, all the departments are really easy to locate. That makes shopping simpler."

She said Dollar General stores usually employ six to 10 people. The employees at the current store will transfer to the new location, Weiss said.

And, while there had been some inquiries about moving the Dollar General in Strasburg from its current location at 185 E. King St., according to Strasburg Town Manager Judson Rex, there are no plans for a new location, Weiss said via email.

"We were approached by a developer for Dollar General about finding a new location in town," Rex said. "It's been months since we've heard from them. It was not from Dollar General. It was a developer who basically develops sites for Dollar General in the mid-Atlantic region."

Rex said town officials wanted to keep the store in the downtown area.
