Frederick County schools still looking to fill positions
By Kim Walter -- firstname.lastname@example.org
During Monday night's Frederick County School Board meeting, Executive Director of Human Resources, John Linaburg, reported that the school system still had a number of positions -- faculty and support staff -- to fill.
With school starting Wednesday, Aug. 29, Linaburg noted in that department, the division was "lagging behind compared to this time last year."
Linaburg said Monday that eight professional and 30 support staff positions were still open. However, he recently said the numbers are already improving.
"We've filled one of the faculty positions, and the we've filled eight or 10 of the classified positions," he said Thursday.
Open faculty spots include two grade-level classroom teachers, two ESL teachers, and a few special education positions. A majority of the support staff opportunities are bus drivers or cafeteria workers. Custodian, instructional aide, sign language interpreter and computer technician jobs make up the remaining openings.
Linaburg credited the increased number of openings to the school division receiving a delayed approved budget this year.
"We were late getting that finalized, and it put everything on hold," he said.
While the situation may seem dismal, Linaburg said it's not all that unusual.
"There is probably not a week in an entire school year that we are ever fully staffed," he said. "There is constant turnover, more so with the classified jobs than faculty."
Linaburg said that Oct. 1 is when the school system would like to have all the professional positions filled, since it's around that time that the state takes an employment "snapshot."
"This is an ongoing process," he said. "But we will have someone in every classroom Wednesday morning."
