Farmers' Markets

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is encouraging farmers' markets across the state to go electronic with Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) machines.

Adding EBT machines on site will allow eligible customers to use their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) vouchers for the market's items. The machines will also allow any customer to pay with a credit or debit card.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is making $4 million in funding available nationwide to place EBT machines in farmers' markets, with Virginia receiving $92,000 of that money based on the number of farmers' markets not currently using EBT machines.

Market managers need to contact Leanne DuBois from the VDACS or Toni Washington from the Virginia Department of Social Services by Sept. 7 to apply for a machine. DuBois can be reached at leanne.dubois@vdacs.virginia.gov or (804) 225-3663. Washington can be contacted at toni.washington@dss.virginia.gov or (804) 726-7662.
