Mill Creek Bridge closed for repairs
By Alex Bridges -- email@example.com
A one-lane bridge near Mt. Jackson remains closed for repairs until the end of the month.
Workers this week with the Virginia Department of Transportation discovered the Mill Creek Bridge on Va. 698 (Turkey Knob Road/Orchard Drive) needed more repairs than expected, according to agency spokeswoman Sandy Myers. VDOT announced the closure Friday. The agency estimates the work to be completed by Aug. 31, according to a VDOT press release.
All work is weather permitting.
Crews began scheduled maintenance on the bridge beams this week, according to a VDOT press release. Officials on Thursday saw potential problems with a beam of the superstructure, which includes the bridge deck and elements that rest on the piers and abutments, the release states. The beam ends have weakened and require repair in order to safely carry traffic loads, according to the release. The bridge will remain closed until repairs are complete, the release states.
Myers explained Friday the discovery came during a routine inspection of the bridge. VDOT had already alerted local school divisions and other agencies the bridge may be closed for a short time. However, when it appeared VDOT may need to close the bridge for a much longer time, the department sent out the alert, Myers said.
The one-lane bridge sees an average 762 vehicle trips per day, one percent of which comes from trucks, according to VDOT data provided by Myers.
