Shentel's finances up in second quarter

Shentel is reporting gains during the second quarter of 2012.
The Edinburg-based telecommunications firm reported a net income of $5.6 million from April to June 30, up 86 percent from the same period in 2011, according to a news release from the company.
Shentel's net income from continuing operations was $5.7 million, representing an 88 percent increase.
Total revenue for the second quarter was $71.4 million, up 16 percent from the $61.6 million revenue from last year's second quarter.
Its adjusted operating income before depreciation and amortization was $26.9 million, which was an increase from $23 million, according to the release.
Shentel's operating expenses were up more than 12 percent to $60.2 million for the second quarter, according to the release.
More than $17 million worth of capital expenditures were made in the second quarter, up $2 million from $15.5 million at the same time last year, the release states. Much of the expenses went toward upgrading acquired cable networks and upgrading capacity at PCS sites.
