A Winchester man was killed in a single vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon.
Robert Ray Kennedy Jr., 51, of 2264 Senseny Road, was killed in the crash shortly after 1:30 p.m., Frederick County Sheriff's Lt. Mike Richardson said.
He said Kennedy was backing a 2003 Toyota Camry out of his driveway when he nearly struck another vehicle driving east on Senseny Road. Once in the road, Kennedy then drove in the center turn lane heading east toward Clarke County, Richardson said.
"He almost struck two other approaching vehicles, which were westbound toward Winchester," the lieutenant said.
He said a witness reported seeing Kennedy go into the proper lane, and then rapidly accelerate, causing the witness to lose sight of the Camry.
"As the witness got to the top of the hill crest, that's when they observed the Toyota Camry was on the opposite side of the road, sitting up on the guard rail," Richardson said. "It appeared to ride almost down the guard rail."
He said it appeared the car had struck the end of the guard rail after crossing into the left lane, and the driver's side door had been impaled by the rail and pulled off of the car.
"The driver was not wearing a seatbelt, [but] he was not ejected," Richardson said.
Kennedy will receive an autopsy, and the crash, which remains under investigation, is being reconstructed, according to Richardson.
