Man dies in single-car crash

A Bentonville man died Friday after a single car accident on U.S. 17 in Fauquier County, according to state police.

A 2011 Hyundai Accent, driven by Todd W. Nichols, 28, was northbound on U.S. 17 about a half mile south of Interstate 66 around 3:50 p.m. when it ran off the right side of the road, state police said. The car hit a fence and a tree, spun around and hit a second tree, authorities said.

Nichols was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital where he died later Friday, state police said. State police said he was not wearing a seat belt. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
