State police investigate two motorcycle crashes
Virginia State Police are investigating two crashes, one a fatality, involving motorcycles on Rivermont Road in Warren County.
The first accident occurred at 5:47 p.m. Saturday when an eastbound 1993 Harley-Davidson motorcycle ran off the right side of Rivermont Road near Lee Burke Road and struck a campaign sign, according to a release issued by state police Saturday night.
The driver, identified as a 54-year-old Ricky V. Cromer of Front Royal, was thrown from the motorcycle. He was taken to Warren Memorial Hospital and then flown to Winchester Medical Center, where he died later that night.
A second accident, involving a motorcycle driven by a 43-year-old Front Royal man, occurred about a mile away on Rivermont Road, the release states. State senior trooper R.L. Fiorvanti was rounding a curve in a Ford Crown Victoria on his way to the first motorcycle crash at 6:08 p.m. when an eastbound 2004 Harley-Davidson motorcycle crossed the center line and sideswiped the patrol car. The report states the motorcycle driver ran off the left side of the road, hit a tree and was thrown from his vehicle.
Police report the driver, Larry E. Darr Jr., 43, of Front Royal, had life-threatening injuries and was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital.
Fiorvanti was not injured, and police report his car's lights and sirens were on when the second crash occurred.
Both motorcyclists were wearing helmets at the time of the crashes. Trooper C.R. Scally is investigating the cause of the earlier crash. The second crash, the release states, is under investigation.
