Drug use leads to nurse's suspension

Daily staff reports

A registered nurse from Stephens City has had her license suspended by the Virginia Board of Nursing.

Jennifer Tara Boyer, of 116 Limb Lane, had her license indefinitely suspended - with a two-year minimum - on Oct. 4, according to online board documents.

Boyer was fired from Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center in Winchester in November 2009 after admitting taking Valium and Dilaudid while on duty, according to the board's order. It states she was found asleep on duty in a patient's room and had two syringes in her pocket.

Boyer tested positive for benzodiazepenes and opiates that day, and co-workers discovered drugs were missing from the nursing home's narcotics cart, according to the order.

"She admitted that she had been using and became addicted to heroin and other narcotics earlier in 2009, but she denied diverting medications from Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center," the order states.

Because she'd signed a contract with the Health Practitioners' Monitoring Program in December 2009, the board stayed any disciplinary action at that time, according to the order.

However, the board was told that the nurse didn't notify the program about a prescription for Ambien, and had a diluted urine drug screen last year, and failed to call in for screens five more times, the order states. She resigned from the program about a year ago, and the stay was lifted.

A public listing for Boyer couldn't be found.
