Release: Bentonville man struck on Remount Road in critical condition
Daily Staff Report
A Bentonville man who suffered serious injuries when he was hit by a car on Remount Road in Front Royal on Monday evening remained in critical but stable condition, town police said in a news release Tuesday.
The release identified the victim, who is being treated at Winchester Medical Center, as Jackson A. Smith, 47, of 29 Smelser Lane. A second pedestrian, April Pittman, 45, of Linden, who was crossing the road with Smith, received lesser injuries and refused treatment at the scene, police said. They said she checked into the hospital Tuesday for treatment of minor injuries.
The car, a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Marguerite T. Lewis, 49, of Jeffersonton was southbound and merging from the right lane to the left when it struck Smith and Pittman in the 400 block of Remount Road around 7:26 p.m., according to police.
Front Royal officer Mark Ramey arrested Lewis and charged her with drunk driving, police said.
Front Royal Sgt. Robbie Seal, who investigated the accident, cited alcohol consumption by Lewis, Smith and Pittman as contributing to the accident. Inclement weather, poor lighting and the pedestrians crossing where there was no visible crosswalk also were factors, Seal said.
