VDOT sets meeting on Cedar Creek bridge project

Daily Staff Report

The Virginia Department of Transportation plans to hold a public information meeting next month on the proposed replacement of the bridge on southbound U.S. 11 at Cedar Creek.

VDOT proposes to build a new, two-lane bridge over Cedar Creek on Old Valley Pike in Shenandoah County. Construction of the $3.1 million project is tentatively scheduled to begin summer 2015 with completion in the fall of 2017, according to VDOT.

Crews will maintain two-way traffic during construction but VDOT advises motorists to stay alert for pattern changes and flagging operations.

Separate bridges serve north- and southbound traffic on U.S. 11. The southbound bridge was built in 1929, according to VDOT. A four-lane divided highway cuts through Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historic Park. The four-lane highway narrows to a three-lane road several hundred feet north of the bridge.

The proposal calls for the construction of a new two-lane bridge in the median parallel to the existing southbound span. The design leaves open the possibility to widen the southbound bridge to four lanes in the future if necessary. VDOT determined a third center turn lane on the bridge is not warranted, the release states. The project also realigns the highway approaches to the new bridge and corrects the curve on southbound U.S. 11 which has experienced motor vehicle crashes, according to VDOT.

The meeting is scheduled from 4-6 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Strasburg Town Office, 174 E. King St. VDOT officials and designers will be available to discuss the project with anyone interested on a one-on-one basis. A court reporter at the meeting also can assist with taking oral comments. Written comments may be submitted at the meeting or within 10 days after the date to Ronald Tabor, Virginia Department of Transportation, 811 Commerce Road, Staunton, VA 24401-9029.
