Berryville resident charged in burglary spree

By Joe Beck

A Berryville man has been arrested and charged with a lengthy list of burglary, larceny and gun-related offenses after authorities linked him to a crime wave in Frederick County that spanned from September 2010 until this month.

The defendant, Michael Paul Ritter, 31, of Academy Street in Berryville was arrested Nov. 8 and indicted in Frederick County Circuit Court the same day, according to online court records.

Frederick County sheriff's office Capt. Allen Sibert said charges of being a violent felon in possession of a firearm and felon in possession of a firearm stem from guns that Ritter allegedly stole during the burglaries.

Sibert said the offenses were scattered throughout Frederick County. He listed the locations of the burglaries as: the 1600 block of Marlboro Road; 3000 block of Wardensville Grade Road; the 400 block of Fox Drive; 200 block of McQuire Drive; 200 block of Greenfield Drive; 100 block of Wright Road; the 200 block of Walnut Drive; the 200 block of Mount Williams Road; the 100 block of Jackson Drive, the 200 block of Sir John's Drive; and the 100 block of Chipmunk Trail.

Sibert said authorities arrested Ritter after receiving a tip on a certain type of vehicle "that could have been involved in some daytime burglaries."

"We put out a description of the vehicle to local law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout," Sibert said. "A Clarke County deputy spotted it, stopped it and determined there was stolen property in the vehicle."

He said Ritter was arrested after a subsequent search warrant of a storage locker turned up other stolen property.

Ritter is being held in jail without bond, Sibert said. He scheduled to appear in Frederick County Circuit Court on Nov. 26.
