Eight people escape house fire; three hurt
Daily staff report
A house fire in Shenandoah County early Sunday morning forced eight people from their home and sent three of the occupants to the hospital.
A smoke alarm alerted people to the blaze at 8312 Supinlick Ridge Road in Basye, according to a press release from John Collins, public information officer for the Shenandoah County Fire and Rescue Department.
Crews were dispatched to the fire at 3:27 a.m. Firefighters arrived on the scene to find the entire house in flames and the blaze appeared ready to spread to two adjacent vehicles in the driveway and a neighboring home. Crews kept the fire from spreading but the vehicles and neighboring home did sustain heat damage, according to Collins.
Firefighters were on the scene for approximately five hours, the release states.
Firefighters and rescue workers responded to the scene from Orkney Springs Fire and Rescue, Conicville Volunteer Fire Department, Mount Jackson Rescue and Fire Company, New Market Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Edinburg Volunteer Fire Company, Woodstock Volunteer Rescue Squad, and Shenandoah County Department of Fire and Rescue. Deputies from the Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office helped with traffic control.
Officials credited a smoke alarm, located in the stairwell between the basement and the first floor, for saving lives. The alarm alerted some of the occupants who escaped the house while a neighbor helped alert others in a loft above the first floor, Collins stated. The neighbor helped raise an extension ladder stored next to the house and the occupants in the loft escaped down the ladder, according to Collins.
Officials reiterated the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home. Residents should keep smoke alarms on each level of their homes, in bedrooms and in common areas such as stairwells and hallways, Collins stated. Anyone needing a smoke alarm or having questions about alarms can contact the county department at 459-6167.
