Daily staff report
A vehicle chase and fight between a Warren County patrol officer and a Luray man ended Wednesday evening with the fleeing suspect charged with aggravated assault and other offenses, the sheriff's office said Friday.
Derek Michael Berry, 33, also was charged with drug violations; resisting arrest, eluding; and driving after license revocation, according to a news release from Sheriff Daniel T. McEathron.
McEathron said the chase began as Sgt. Josh Seal noticed a southbound SUV in front of him on U.S. 340 cross the center line several times. Seal tried to stop the vehicle, but it turned onto Indian Hollow Road, where Berry left the vehicle and fled running through a field, according to McEathron.
Seal caught Berry, and a struggle ensued, McEathron said. The confrontation ended when Seal used pepper spray to gain control of Berry and handcuff him, McEathron said.
Berry had money and several plastic bags that contained green leafy material on him at the time of his arrest, according to McEathron.
Berry is being held without bail in the Warren County Jail and is scheduled to appear in general district court on Dec. 12.
