Man arrested in tire iron assault at Handy Mart

By Joe Beck

Strasburg police say they arrested an active duty member of the military Sunday night after he allegedly hit a Woodstock man several times in the head with a tire iron and led police on a pursuit southbound on Interstate 81.

Strasburg police Maj. Jerome Robinson said police arrested Jeremy Blanchard of Fort Belvoir, and obtained warrants against him for aggravated malicious wounding and felony eluding.

The victim, David Dye Jr., 20, of Woodstock, was taken to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital where "he received numerous staples in his head from the assault," Robinson said.

Robinson said Blanchard also was taken to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital and later transported to Winchester Medical Center, where he remained Monday afternoon. Robinson said he believed Blanchard soon would be released from the hospital, whereupon police planned to take him to the Shenandoah County Jail and execute the arrest warrants.

"The whole thing was over an ex-girlfriend," Robinson said of the dispute that ignited the alleged assault.

Blanchard saw his former girlfriend with Dye as he entered the Handy Mart at 314 W. King St., Robinson said.

Robinson said Strasburg police received a call at 9 p.m. Sunday reporting an assault at the store.

Lt. Robert Conner arrived at the scene as Blanchard was leaving, Robinson said. Connor followed Blanchard onto I-81 and gave chase until Blanchard encountered a Shenandoah County sheriff's deputy who had deployed stop sticks that flattened the tires on the fleeing vehicle, Robinson said.

Robinson said Blanchard kept traveling until he ran into the median. Blanchard locked himself in the vehicle, but a Strasburg officer broke the vehicle's window and used a taser to subdue him, according to Robinson.

Robinson said Blanchard told police he had injected himself with insulin before the incident. As a result, Robinson said, Blanchard was taken to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital and later to Winchester Medical Center to be kept under observation.

Robinson said Woodstock police guarded the crime scene at the Handy Mart while Strasburg police pursued Blanchard.

The investigation is continuing. Robinson said anyone with information about the crime should call Strasburg police Investigator Larry Crum.
