Quicksburg man accused of faking identity

By Joe Beck

A Quicksburg man is facing nine charges, five of them felonies, linked to obtaining and producing documents that law enforcement officials say they believe were intended to conceal his status as an alleged illegal immigrant.

Shenandoah County law enforcement authorities say they arrested Gerado Afredo Gonez-Vasquez, 20, of 2659 Quicksburg Road on Oct. 28. Lt. Tom Shelton of the sheriff's office said the arrest came after he displayed the documents at the jail during the processing of paperwork from a blood alcohol test linked to possible drunk driving.

Gonez-Vasquez appeared in general district court Nov. 9 where he waived a preliminary hearing, and his case was certified for possible charges before a grand jury in circuit court on Dec. 5.

The charges against Gonez-Vasquez include four felony counts of forging a public record; unlawfully obtaining a department of motor vehicles document; three counts of possessing a fictitious identification and one count of possession of a fictitious birth certificate.

Shelton said Gonez-Vasquez was being held in the jail on a federal detainer after authorities determined he is an illegal immigrant.

"He is here illegally and had purchased an ID from an individual," Shelton said of Gonez-Vasquez.

Shelton said authorities found the fake documents on Gonez-Vasquez while he was at the jail signing a blood alcohol test document.

"Our investigator was contacted by the jail and advised they had some possible fake documents," Shelton said. "We found the documents he was displaying were, in fact, fake documents."

Shelton said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement will determine Gonez-Vasquez's future in this country after his case his resolved.

"They won't do anything until they see what he's convicted of," Shelton said.

Shelton said the sentences on each of four felonies range from two to 10 years in prison. A fifth felony carries a prison sentence of from one to five years.
