Southbound vehicle went off highway, over embankment

The Virginia Department of Transportation reported a major traffic jam around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday on Interstate 81 between Toms Brook and Woodstock after a vehicle went off the road near mile marker 286.

Traffic was backed up about four miles, according to VDOT. Both southbound lanes and right shoulder were closed, but VDOT reported all lanes cleared by 6:22 p.m.

Sgt. F.L. (Les) Tyler of the Virginia State Police reported the accident happened around 3:08 p.m. Laura Nordstrom, 48, of Middleburg drove her southbound 2013 Volkswagen Jetta off the right side of the road where it went over a guard rail and down an embankment, Tyler said.

The car came to a rest next to the bridge by Pughs Run, where fire and rescue crews removed Nordstrom from the car and placed her in a helicopter that transported her to Winchester Medical Center.

Tyler said trooper M.W. Little issued a summons for reckless driving-- failure to maintain control to Nordstrom.

The Shenandoah County sheriff's office assisted at the scene.
