First Night Winchester offers fun for family on Dec. 31

Daily Staff Report

First Night Winchester 2013 will ring in the new year with a lot of events participants expect, while adding a few new ones.

At a press conference on Friday, board members of First Night Winchester gathered at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley on Amherst Street to announce this year's planned events for the Dec. 31 event.

"First Night Winchester is a signature Winchester tradition," said Felicia Hart, executive director of the annual event. The goal, she said, is to provide a "safe and healthy way to usher in the new year with family and friends."

Local restaurants will be open to provide food, and some area churches will provide refreshments such as hot apple cider, hot chocolate, coffee, holiday treats and even a First Bite pancake breakfast.

New this year will be the Glitterbugz, who will offer face painting, balloon creations and magic acts, and the Unicycle Lady.

The Blue Ridge Thunder Cloggers will provide percussive, toe-tapping fun for the whole family, according to event information.

Normally closed on Mondays, the museum will be open on Dec. 31 as part of the celebration, and those who purchase a First Night button, which are on sale now, will have access to all venues and entertainment.

First Night Winchester was started in 1998 and its mission, according to its website firstnightwinchester.com, "...is to bring friends and families together and unite our community in all its diversity though the visual and performing arts."
