The Rotary Club of Front Royal has announced that it is establishing an annual student athlete award to recognize a male and female from either Warren County High School or Skyline High School.

Doug Stanley, public relations committee chair, said the award would not be limited to seniors at the high schools, as the goal is to recognize "the best of the best."

"I'm not sure it would typically go to a ninth grader, but this really is about looking for a well rounded student athlete in high school," he said.

Rotary members will rely on athletic directors at both high schools to submit names to be considered. The Rotary's final picks will be put up for approval by the Warren County Board of Supervisors.

Winners will receive some type of plaque or trophy, Stanley said. Down the road, the award may include some kind of monetary prize or scholarship, "but that would take time to set up."

The awards are named for two student athletes who attended Warren County High School at different times.

The top female athlete award is named for Heidi Moore and the top male athlete award is named for John Marlow.

Moore, who graduated in 1999, held school records in six different track and field events, and still holds some of those records today. She was a 12-time all-Northwestern District selection and five-time all-state honoree. Moore was also named the school's Most Outstanding Girls Track & Field Performer three years in a row.

To further her education, Moore attended James Madison University, where she earned both undergraduate and master's degrees in Communication Sciences and Disorders.

In 2009, just ten years after graduating high school, Moore passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer.

"Personally, I've never heard anything but positive things about her," Stanley said.

Marlow graduated in 1957 after being a member of the undefeated 1956 football team. He held records at Warren County High School for his performance in basketball. Marlow was also a district champion in the discus event.

After high school, Marlow earned three letters in football and track and filed at the University of Virginia. He served on the Warren County Board of Supervisors in 1968 and was chairman from 1974-1978. Additionally, he was Front Royal's mayor from 1982 to 1990.

"To have [the award] named after me is very humbling, but also an honor of which I am quite proud," he said Tuesday. "I am also very pleased and honored to be coupled with Heidi Moore in this annual award."

Requirements of those student-athletes being considered for the award include earning a letter in a varsity sport, excelling in athletics and academics, making an impact on the local community and demonstrating "the highest in ethical standards."

Stanley said Moore and Marlow are "two great people from this county."

"We truly believe that Heidi and John represent the best in what we are looking for in recipients of these awards, both on and off the field," Stanley said.

Nominations for the presentation of the awards will be made by June 1, 2013.
