Hunt is on for three men who robbed, hit shopkeeper
By Sally Voth
Winchester police are hunting for three men who held up the Caribbean Food Store at gunpoint and assaulted an 81-year-old clerk Tuesday night.
Described by Winchester police community relations/crime prevention specialist Lauren Cummings as a "small mom and pop" convenience-type store, Caribbean Food, located at 226 Kern St., was robbed at about 9 p.m.
The trio of thieves demanded cash at gunpoint, and were last seen heading east on Kern Street, according to a Winchester police news release.
Clifford Farquharson, 81, said he has had the Kern Street store for "quite a while." He said the three men came in and tried to "mess up the cash register," which he said didn't have much money.
"The one have a gun," he said.
Farquharson, who is from Jamaica, said the assailants made off with some money he had behind the counter.
"One of them hit me with their fist," he said. "I'm OK. Who [they were], I don't know. I want to get some camera.
"It happened so fast. A friend came after a while and then we called the police. [The robbers] just got money and some other stuff like cigars."
Cummings said Farquharson didn't need treatment for his injuries.
She described the suspects as all black men between the ages of 20 and 30. One is described as being about 6 feet 2 inches tall, 180 pounds and wearing a khaki suit, another as wearing a black toboggan and being anywhere from 5 feet 4 inches to 6 feet 2 inches tall, and the third was wearing dark sweatpants.
