Boy injured after falling off ski lift at Bryce Resort

By Sally Voth

A Powhatan School student was airlifted to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville on Tuesday afternoon after falling off of a Bryce Resort ski lift.

The 9-year-old Winchester boy had a possible femur fracture and a facial laceration, Orkney Springs Fire and Rescue Assistant Chief Stacey Rinker said. He said the boy was taken by ambulance to Mt. Jackson Rescue and Fire Department, and then flown out by Pegasus.

Shenandoah County Fire and Rescue Chief Gary Yew said rescue workers were dispatched at about 2:15 p.m.

Bryce Resort mountain manager Ryan Locher said one of the members of the ski patrol was an off-duty emergency medical technician, and added the injured boy was tended to very quickly.

"We had one of our students that came off our lift," he said of the incident. "They did have the bar down. They were preparing to unload. The bar came up and he slipped out."

Locher estimated the boy fell about 25 feet from the resort's new quad lift.

"The patient is doing well," he said. "They flew him to U.Va. on precautionary. He's doing fine. I think it will be a good turnout. He was conscious the whole time."

Locher said Powhatan School in Boyce brings its students to the ski resort four times a year. He said an adult was with the student on the lift, and that his father was at the resort.

Locher said the boy was talking after his accident, and had about a 2-inch gash above his eye. He said the boy's leg was possibly broken.

Rinker said his agency was assisted by Mt. Jackson Rescue and Fire and county fire and rescue workers.
