Dozens of birds killed in New Year's Day fire

Daily staff report

A detached garage containing dozens of chickens west of Woodstock was destroyed in a New Year's Day fire, according to Shenandoah County Fire Marshal David Ferguson.

Ferguson said the blaze, at 6557 Back Road, was reported at about 12:20 p.m. Tuesday, and remains under investigation. He said there were 65 chickens of assorted varieties in the building.

In addition to the Shenandoah County Department of Fire and Rescue, Woodstock Fire Department, Strasburg Fire Department, Toms Brook Fire and Rescue, and Woodstock Rescue Squad responded to the fire, he said.

"They had a lot of structures nearby that they had to concentrate on [protecting] when they arrived on the scene, and the structure was pretty well involved," Ferguson said.

He said the garage was made of cinder blocks. Ferguson didn't have a damage estimate on Wednesday afternoon.
