Schools looking at 2013-2014 calendar drafts

Schools looking at 2013-2014 calendar drafts

By Kim Walter

The Warren County school board will discuss two versions of a calendar for the 2013-2014 school year at their meeting Thursday night.

Last week, board members went through results of a calendar survey given to parents and faculty members in the county. Hoping to honor as many of the suggestions as possible, several scenarios were presented, which included starting the school week later, a full week for spring break and changing the number of professional development days in a school year.

School officials were then asked to create calendars for the next two school years; one with built-in inclement weather days and a week for spring break, and another that made the inclement weather days double as a possible longer spring break.

Both draft calendars for the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 school years begin the Wednesday before Labor Day. Five professional development days take place before the first day of school. Eight professional development days will take place during the course of the year, with one also being scheduled after the last day of school.

While one calendar has a full week off for spring break, including Good Friday and the Monday after Easter, the other only has Good Friday scheduled as a day off from school. The Monday through Thursday before that are scheduled as inclement weather days doubling as days for Spring break.

As was discussed at the school board's last work session, if the days aren't needed to replace instructional time, they will remain days off from school. However, if the days are needed to make up instructional time, Spring break will be shortened accordingly.

In the calendar which separates Spring break and inclement weather days, the 2013-2014 school year would end on June 20. The other would end the school year a week earlier, on June 13.

During the work session, board member Kimberly Athey had asked that the number of professional days be decreased to 10 to meet the minimum requirement. However, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Greg Drescher and Director of Professional Development Lisa Rudacille asked to keep the number at 14, at least.

Rudacille said the days were vital during the current school year, because the time was used to inform teachers of the changes in teacher evaluations which will be in effect this year.

Board member Joanne Cherefko said she had worked in a school system that gave teachers only one professional development day, and supported keeping the number of days in Warren County at 14.

School board members will weigh in on the draft calendars during Thursday night's meeting at 7 p.m. They will also look at the possible 2014-2015 school year calendars, as they hope to create a calendar framework to be used from year to year to alleviate the need for annual change.
