First Bank & Trust Company recently announced that William H. Hayter, president and CEO of First Bank & Trust Company, has been elected as Chairman of the Board for the Virginia Agribusiness Council.

Hayter was installed at the council's board of directors meeting in December and officially took office on Jan. 1. He has been a member of the board of directors since 2007, where he most recently served as vice chairman.

On Jan. 10, Hayter presented Gov. Bob McDonnell with the council's Distinguished Friend of Virginia Agribusiness Award at the 42nd Annual Legislative Appreciation Banquet in Richmond.

Attorney Marilyn Ann Solomon recently participated in the Third Annual PHC Invitational Mock Trial Tournament at Patrick Henry College in Purcellville.

Solomon volunteered her time as a judge to preside over two three-hour trials during the two-day national competition and spent time mentoring students from all across the country on trial strategies and techniques in the courtroom.

New president

The Virginia Bar Association recently installed Thomas R. Bagby of Roanoke as president this weekend. His term runs until the VBA's next annual meeting, which is to be held in Jan. 2014.

New employees

United Brokerage Services, Inc. recently announced the addition of Peter Warren as its newest financial adviser. Warren, a Winchester native, most recently worked at Wells Fargo Bank.

Warren's main office will be located in the United Bank office at 139 N. Cameron St., Winchester, and he can be reached by calling 450-3064. Warren will serve customers in the Northern Shenandoah Valley Market.

Pete Benedetto, senior conservation technician of the Lord Fairfax Soil and Water Conservation District, has retired as of Jan. 1.

Benedetto was a part of the Lord Fairfax SWCD for nearly 10 years and had worked with numerous producers in Clarke, Frederick, Shenandoah and Warren counties to implement conservation practices that helped to improve water quality and increase productivity for the farmer.

Lord Fairfax SWCD has hired Matt Kowalski to step into the role of senior conservation technician beginning in early February. Kowalski has a bachelor's degree in wildlife management from Frostburg State (Md.) and a master's degree in biology from California University of Pennsylvania.

Kowalski, originally from Stephens City, has spent the last several years with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

Business growth

Invenio Solutions recently announced a 585-percent growth in the number of employees in the business-to-business telecom sales division since the division's inception in February 2011.

In addition to the increase in headcount, new and current client engagements drove a 200-percent increase in the telecom division's revenue from outsourced telecommunications sales in 2011 to 2012.

Financial education

DuPont Community Credit Union (DCCU) has reached over 8,000 students in the number of financial education exposures with schools and organizations for the fourth straight year. The credit union also added 28 new financial education partners to its program in 2012.

DCCU's financial education programs are for all age groups and are also structured to assist teachers with various Virginia Standards of Learning requirements.
