Minor damage reported at automotive parts plant fire

STRASBURG -- Firefighters and workers at the International Automotive Components plant at 806 E. Queen St. in Strasburg quickly brought a fire under control early Friday afternoon with only minor damage and no injuries.

Strasburg Fire Chief Jeff Wharton reported that his department answered a call 12:32 p.m. and arrived to find that workers had "knocked down" most of the fire using extinguishers.

Wharton said the fire started in a press that melts plastic. The fire marshal was still investigating the cause after firefighters left the scene about an hour and a half later, Wharton said.

"It was just a basic fire in a machine, and it was contained in the machine," Wharton said.

International Automotive Components' Web site identifies it as a worldwide supplier of door and trim systems, instrument panels, consoles, cockpits and other automotive parts. The company is headquartered in Southfield, Mich.
