Police complete two days of live shooter training

Warren County Sheriff Daniel T. McEathron announced Tuesday the completion of two days of active shooter training at the Warren County Public Safety Building and Warren County Middle School.

The exercise on Friday and Monday involved more than 90 law enforcement officers from the Sheriff's Office, Front Royal Police Department and Virginia State Patrol, McEathron said in a news release. McEathron described the training as a regularly scheduled activity conducted since the late 1990s for new law enforcement officers and a refresher course for veteran officers.

McEathron said the Lee-Jackson state holiday on Friday and Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday allowed the training to be scheduled in the school with no students in the building.

The training consisted of two eight-hour days in which the participants focused on responding to active shooter incidents and organizing efforts to rescue victims.

In an interview, McEathron said the training was not a reaction to recent public concern about school shootings.

"The training had been planned for months, and it just happened to fall on those two days," he said.
