The doctors of Stephens City Family Medicine aren't in danger of running out of patients any time soon.
Just the opposite, in fact. After spending eight years by Food Lion on Fairfax Pike, the group moved in October to a new, stand-alone location at 160 Warrior Drive, office manager Monica Hott said.
She said Dr. Joel Grant started the practice in 2004. It now includes Dr. Chris Craig, Dr. Bret Ripley, physician assistant Kacey Sebert and nurse practitioner Pamela Campbell. The search is on for another physician, Hott said.
"We do newborn care all the way up to geriatric care," she said.
That includes gynecology, sports and school physicals and vaccinations.
Hott said there wasn't enough room in the old office space to even include having Campbell, and certainly not another doctor. She said the practice has around 8,500 active patients.
More doctors are needed in the Shenandoah Valley, she said.
"It's such a shortage of primary care physicians in the area," Hott said. "Our goal is always to service Stephens City and the surrounding area."
She said it's also important that the doctors are able to schedule same-day sick visits.
Stephens City Family Medicine is able to offer some old-fashioned doctoring in certain cases.
"For our established patients, when they become homebound, our physicians will go to their home and see them," Hott said.
She said they'll see patients who live within 10 miles of the office.
Grant said he and Craig do the house calls.
"Rumor has it that it's pretty rare for doctors to do home visits," he said. "Dr. Craig and I both graduated from the same residency program, part of that being a rural track. It [required] that we did home visits, and it's something that we both enjoy, and there's a need for it."
Grant also said the practice outgrew its old location. One advantage of the poor economy is lower construction costs, he noted.
"As a result, it was easier to afford," Grant said. "We got a great deal, and we love it."
Stephens City Family Medicine's hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 8 - 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
