Tickets available for pilot TV musical variety show

By Sally Voth

A TV star of the 1970s and 1980s is trying to get another show off the ground, this time at the Yellow Barn in Quicksburg.

Ben "Cooter" Jones, of Dukes of Hazzard fame, will be at the Shenandoah Caverns' attraction Jan. 26 to tape a pilot.

The pilot is for a show tentatively titled "Shenandoah Jamboree," said Judith Ruby, manager of the Yellow Barn, which opened up in June 2007. "It's a musical variety show, and we will have Cooter's Garage Band. There will be comedy, music. It's a family oriented show. Cooter will be bringing the General Lee."

Lisa Meadows and her husband, Robby, are in Cooter's Garage Band, which includes several others in addition to them and Jones, she said. The Meadows' grown daughters, Nikki and JoJo, will also be in the variety show, she said.

"He's a great entertainer," Mrs. Meadows said Wednesday evening. "We've worked with him for 13 years."

She said they've played with Jones at the Grand Ole Opry, and performed with him on Virginia Dreams Center Stage, which aired on RFGTV and WHSV for four years.

"We're very excited," Mrs. Meadows said. "Anything that we do with Ben has always been successful."

The couple met Jones when he opened his museum and shop, "Cooter's Place," in 1999 in Sperryville. It closed about 10 years ago.

"We started playing over there every Saturday," Mrs. Meadows said. "We played over there every Saturday until he closed the doors."

She said they've also performed with Jones at "Dukes of Hazzard" reunion shows.

Mrs. Meadows said it's an honor to work with him again on the pilot.

"He's got some great ideas he wants to incorporate with his Cooter character," she said. "He's just an awesome guy. This is exciting because we get to do it as a family."

Ruby said the Yellow Barn had been looking to have shows there.

"We came together because they're great music talents and we're a great venue," she said. "The next step is to find a network, and we have quite a few good possibilities lined up right now."

Tickets are available for the taping. They're $10 each, and Ruby recommended they be purchased in advance by calling 540 477-2432. The show starts at 7 p.m., and doors open at 6 p.m.
