Community Wellness Festival this Saturday

Daily staff report

Residents are invited Saturday to the Apple Blossom Mall in Winchester to enjoy the Community Wellness Festival, sponsored by the Winchester Medical Center Foundation.

From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the mall will be taken over by health, wellness and fitness exhibitors, kids activities, free and low-cost health screenings, healthy cooking demonstrations and even a blood drive.

The festival is organized around key health and wellness topics: life, eating well, healthy kids, healthy women and healthy seniors.

Screenings include low-cost blood testing, no-charge heart attack risk profiles, free blood pressure checks, hearing, vision and glaucoma tests and free blood glucose testing. Some of the tests will be conducted by Valley Health, while others will be performed by the Shenandoah University Division of Nursing.

Several demonstrations are planned in the healthy eating area, which will be located in the Sears wing of the mall. At 11 a.m., Debbie Berg with the Valley Health Diabetes Management Program, will present "Planning quick, easy, healthy meals."

Chefs from Shenandoah Valley Westminister Canterbury will offer demonstrations at noon, and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Chef Steve Weiss, a Food Network Challenge competitor, will offer healthful hints and cooking tips for a busy lifestyle.

Other health presentations at the fair will include those by the Brain Injury Association of Virginia, Concern Hotline, Northwestern Community Services and Russ King Therapeutic Massage.

Near the new children's play area, families can learn about Big Brothers Big Sisters, kids nutrition, ADHD and Healthy Families.

Seniors can get a closer look at physical therapy and rehab options, as well as assisted living and services offered through Valley Health.

AbbaCare Pregnancy Center will have a station for women who attend, along with The Laurel Center, Daily Pain Support Group and Every Woman's Life. That section will be by the food court.

While strolling, visitors are encouraged to stop by exhibits and receive a sticker for a health game card. If stickers are collected from four out of the six themed areas, participants will be eligible to win one of several prizes.

Interactive fitness stations also are scheduled throughout the day by the JCPenney Court.
