Shenandoah County artisan trail unveils name after 4 months

By Sally Voth

It took four months, but Shenandoah County's forming Artisan Trail has found a lyrical name.

Tourism and marketing director Natalie Wills announced Tuesday that "O Shenandoah County Artisan Trail" had been selected as the moniker. It will be part of the Artisans Center of Virginia.

"It took four months to work through this," Wills said in a phone interview. "We had so many really good suggestions and a lot to work through."

Using "O," rather than "Oh," worked out better, she said.

"If you look at the county seal, it's actually an O," Wills explained. "There's so much fun we can do to diversify that O."

Then, there's the famous song.

"We're kind of playing off the song," Wills said.

The county is at an advantage by having such a recognizable name, too, she said.

"We have a little more use of the word 'Shenandoah' than others are going to have because it's the name of the county," Wills said.

She doesn't think there will be any copyright issues.

"We don't believe so, especially because we're kind of just using the 'O,' and we still have county with Shenandoah," she said. "We feel like we're going to be okay."

"A River Runs Through It" was also suggested, according to Wills, but she thought using the name of a movie might present an issue.

About 30 artisans have signed up to join the trail network.

"Our goal initially starting out was 50," Wills said. "We're just now really ramping it up. We want to get everybody on board by May 1."

That would allow them to get included in a brochure, she said. Membership also includes a sign and recognition on the website.
