Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Park will be getting a site manager within weeks.

Amy Bracewell's first day is scheduled for March 10, according to a news release from the National Park Service.

She has worked at Mt. Rushmore National Memorial for six years, she said in a Wednesday afternoon phone interview. There, she is the memorial's historian and education coordinator.

"I love the cultural resources and the cultural history of the United States, and [the Shenandoah Valley] is particularly interesting," Bracewell, who is originally from Atlanta, said. "There's a lot going on, from original inhabitants up to the Civil War and on into Reconstruction and today.

"The Shenandoah Valley and Virginia is just such a rich area for all of that. I think that the communities are so intertwined in that history and so passionate about it. I think it's going to be really exciting to work with the communities that have a real passion for preserving their history."

According to the news release, Bracewell has a bachelor's degree in anthropology and German studies from Emory University, a master's degree in art history from the University of Texas at Austin, a master's of historic preservation from the University of Georgia, and also graduated from Harvard University's Archeological Field School.

In the release, Northeast Regional Director Dennis Reidenbach notes, "Amy's background, which blends expertise in historic preservation and relevant public programming through partnerships, is an ideal fit for Cedar Creek and Belle Grove."

The announcement about Bracewell comes about a week after the National Park Service announced it had appointed Jim Northup, who is superintendent of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan, to be superintendent of both Cedar Creek and Belle Grove as well as Shenandoah National Park.

The advisory commission for the 10-year-old Middletown park had protested merging the supervision of the two parks.
