Inmate accused of assaulting deputy
By Joe Beck
A 29-year-old woman inmate was indicted Monday in Warren County Circuit Court on a charge accusing her of assault and battery against a deputy.
Brandy Lynn Knight, whose last listed address is 136 Seacock Drive, Front Royal, fought with Deputy Amber Nakai after Nakai tried to quell a dispute on Nov. 1 between Knight and another inmate, according to the criminal complaint. Nakai, who wrote the complaint, said the struggle left her with several bruises on her left arm.
Nakai said in her complaint that the incident began when she responded to a report of shouting in a part of the jail. She said she arrived at the scene to find Knight standing at the entry to a room.
Nakai said Knight continued shouting at another inmate, "then stooped over at her waist, turned quickly and ducked into room No. 9."
Nakai said Knight stated she was "going to get" the other inmate, then left the room and ducked into another room.
Nakai said she ran toward Knight to try to keep her separated from the other inmate. A struggle broke out and "Knight fought with me as I tried to stop her progress by trapping her against the bunk beds in room #10," Nakai wrote.
Online court records show Knight was sentenced to jail in September after pleading guilty to a charge of conspiracy to commit robbery.
In other indictments, two Front Royal men were charged with one count each of possession of heroin, and one of them immediately pleaded guilty.
Judge Dennis L. Hupp sentenced Travis Wayne Baugher, 30, of 292 W. Criser Road, to two years probation after suspending a two-year prison.
The other defendant in the case, Toby Eugene Baugher, 45, of 211 Farm View Road, also appeared in court. Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Michael Fleming said Thursday he expected Toby Baugher to also plead guilty to the same charge next week.
The criminal complaint against the two defendants states that Front Royal police discovered a substance on both of them that later tested positive for heroin during a traffic stop on Aug. 25. Toby Baugher was driving the car when officer J.E. Fenton noticed it weaving in and out of its lane on Shenandoah Avenue, according to the criminal complaint.
Fleming said he had no information on whether two defendants are related to each other.
