Business symposium at SU planned for April

Whether you're part of a large corporation, work for a small business, or you are an entrepreneur thinking of starting a company, the Harry F. Byrd Jr. School of Business Business Symposium might be able to help.
The fifth annual symposium will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 4 at Shenandoah University in Winchester.
Paul Delmerico, general manager and partner at SpecialMade Goods & Services Inc. in Winchester, and part of the business school's advisory board, said the symposium is a signature event that they put on.
"We've had very good response. It grows every year," he said.
Delmerico explained the event is geared toward people working in both for profit and nonprofit businesses, those looking to start a business, and business students.
There are two keynote speakers and then breakout sessions that attendees can choose to attend.
Donald Pierce, the east division consumer and business insights officer for the McDonald's Corp., will be the first speaker. The afternoon speaker is Thomas Frey, executive director of the DaVinci Institute.
Among the breakout topics to select from are new media marketing, the Affordable Care Act, family businesses, and tips on starting a business.
Delmerico also said lunch sessions have been added. The local economy, fraud in small businesses and internal controls are among the topics.
"There's something in this event for everybody," Delmerico said.
He said the $55 registration fee is waived for students and includes lunch and a glass of wine at a wine and cheese networking reception following the symposium.
"So, in terms of value, it's a very high-value proposition," Delmerico said. "What we strive to do, and this is where it improves every year, we want to provide to our regional business community the opportunity for people to hear the perspectives of what I would call nationally recognized business people."
Speakers include Bill Brandt, co-founder and former CEO of American Woodmark Corp.; Jay Rudolph, who manages human resources at Trex Co.; Mark Merrill, CEO and president of Valley Health; Shashi Bellamkonda, social media senior director at Web.com and an adjunct marketing professor at Georgetown University; Gina Watkins, an educational marketing expert at Constant Contact; and Tim Frees, a certified fraud examiner, according to the symposium's website, www.subusiness.org.
The symposium will give business people an opportunity "to learn, to be inspired, to network, and frankly, to grow in their understanding of business," Delmerico said.
He added, "It's through the generous support of our local sponsors that we're able to offer an event of this quality and caliber, and keep the registration fee so low."
