Farm Bureau women celebrate Ag Literacy Week

By Sally Voth

As Virginia celebrates Agriculture Week and Agriculture Literacy Week, the Shenandoah County Farm Bureau is spreading knowledge.

Carol Boyer is chairwoman of the county Farm Bureau's women's committee. She spent Wednesday reading "Kelly's Big Day" by Tammy Maxey to area children in schools, preschools and daycares.

The book, Boyer said, is about going to the fair and exhibiting a cow.

"They really seemed very interested, and when I asked questions, they all wanted to answer at one time," she said.

From those answers, Boyer, who was raised on a large farm in Mississippi and now lives on a farm in Fort Valley, was able to infer that most children are about three generations removed from farm life. She said the women's committee is a busy group, and not just during this week.

"We go into the schools and to the other places -- fairs and exhibits and so forth -- and we do a lot of education for not only children, but adults and the non-agricultural public," Boyer said. "We just want our children to be aware of where their food comes from and to eat things that come from the farms, and to eat things that are healthy. And, to help people to realize that agriculture is a way of life."

While Agriculture Week has been around for a good while, Agriculture Literacy Week has only been observed for a few years, she said.

"Our curriculum for Ag in the Classroom is SOL-approved," Boyer said. "We have lesson plans for all the classes."

Those plans can be done any time during the school year, she said.

According to a news release from Boyer, the Farm Bureau board and local FFA chapters also read the book to area children. The women's committee donated more than 96 pounds of non-perishable food to the Edinburg Active Living Center and pull tabs to the Ronald McDonald House Charities, and the board also donated $500 to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, according to
