Daily staff report
Steven P. Shaffer announced Thursday he wants to run for the District 4 seat on the Shenandoah County Board of Supervisors.
Shaffer intends to seek the Republican Party nomination to run in the election in November, he stated in a press release. Shaffer will compete against Woodstock resident Cindy Bailey, who also is seeking the party's nomination to run for the seat currently held by Supervisor Sharon Baroncelli.
The former school board member works as a substitute teacher and a substitute bus driver for the county system. Shaffer also serves as the head coach of swim teams at Central High School and the Woodstock Dolphins Swim Team.
Shaffer served as a member of the county's first elected School Board in 1995 until 2003 and as its chairman in 2001 and 2002. Shaffer has served on other local boards.
Shaffer said he could help bridge the Board of Supervisors and the School Board, given his experience on the latter. He cited former Supervisor Ralph Bauserman as inspiration.
"He seemed to be a man of great wisdom," Shaffer said. "Whenever he spoke he always seemed to have the right thing to say and I always admired him and wisdom he brought to the table, and I'd like to follow in his footsteps."
Shaffer, 55, holds a bachelor of fine arts from The American University. Shaffer and his wife Gael have four children, one of whom attends Central High School, and one granddaughter. Shaffer notes he remains an active swimmer, kayaker and hiker.
Shaffer has founded businesses and currently owns and manages Blue Canoe Crew. He also owns and manages three rental properties.
