Two arrested, charged with murder of former Berryville official

Daily staff report

Two men were indicted Thursday on capital murder charges in the shooting death of former Berryville Town Council member Gail Smith, Police Chief W. Neil White disclosed Friday.

White said in a press release that defendants Timothy Smith Jr., 53, of Burkeville and Tony M. Sharpe, 26, of Farmville, also were charged with conspiracy to commit murder and use of a firearm while committing a felony in the July 2009 homicide.

White said Smith was arrested at a residence on Raccoon Crossing Way in Burkeville on Thursday evening. Sharpe was arrested at residence on Early Street in Farmville, also on Thursday evening, he said.

Both were taken into custody without incident and are being held without bond, he said. They are scheduled to appear in Clarke County Circuit Court on April 15.

White said the investigation, which began with the discovery of Smith dead from a gunshot wound in her home, is still active.

Timothy Smith Jr. is Gail Smith's brother. He was charged with solicitation to commit murder against her in April, a charge that was dropped in July, according to state online court records.
