West Virginia man killed in Monday afternoon crash

Daily staff report

State police have identified the West Virginia man killed in an icy crash Monday afternoon on Interstate 81.

Michael Joseph Keckley, 38, of Hampshire, died at the scene, state police spokesman Sgt. F.L. "Les" Tyler said.

The crash happened at about 5:30 p.m. on southbound I-81, 500 feet north of the Interstate 66 interchange, he said.

Tyler said Keckley was driving a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser in the left lane when he lost control, went into the right lane and struck the side of a 2008 Freightliner tractor-trailer.

The Chrysler then went back into the left lane and off the side of the road, and then went into the median and overturned, Tyler said. He said Keckley, who wasn't wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the car.

"The roadway was icy at the time of the crash," Tyler said.
