Daily wins sweepstakes award in Virginia Press Association contest

Daily staff report

NORFOLK - The Northern Virginia Daily is among the winners of the annual Virginia Press Association's sweepstakes awards, which were presented on Saturday in Norfolk.

This is the 13th year in a row that the Daily has won the top award for daily newspapers with a circulation of under 20,000. It's also the 22nd year out of the past 25 years that the Daily has brought home the sweepstakes plaque.

The award is presented to newspapers that have won the most top places for awards in three categories - art and photos, writing and presentation.

The Daily scored 54 points out of a possible 231 for the 2012 contest year to win. There were 10 other Virginia daily newspapers under 20,000 in circulation competing, according to a release issued by the press association.

This year, the Daily's entries for art and photos garnered the most points. The Suffolk News-Herald had the most points in the writing and presentation categories and the Progress-Index of Petersburg had the most points in the multimedia category, the release states.

Other sweepstakes winners were the Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk, The Free-Lance Star of Fredericksburg, the Loudoun Times-Mirror of Leesburg - for non-daily publications with a circulation of 10,000 or more, and Style Weekly - for a specialty publication.

The Potomac Local News of Woodbridge won the sweepstakes for online-only publication, and The Breeze of James Madison University won the sweepstakes award for a non-daily publication with a circulation between 5,000 and 10,000. The Tidewater News of Franklin won the award for non-daily publications under 5,000.
