Kiwanis Club donation facilitates library's Books To Go collection

By Josette Keelor

Thanks to a donation from the Front Royal Kiwanis Club, Samuels Public Library now can offer its Books to Go collection to the community.

Michal Ashby, youth services supervisor at the library, said the grant of about $1,500 will facilitate the collection the library launched last week.

Books to Go is a thematic collection of six books in a backpack, Ashby said Friday.

"Parents can just grab the bag if they're in a hurry," she said. "We're trying to make it a little more convenient for parents on the run."

There will be 10 Books to Go kits available at a time, according to a release from the library, each with five to seven books on a popular children's subject, like dinosaurs, pirates, princesses, manners and community helpers. Another application is for a preschool or Kindergarten classroom teacher who is seeking a week's worth of books on a particular theme.

Ashby said since the collection's start last week, it's been a hit.

"They're being checked out." Some of our parents have been extremely excited about them," she said.

A check presentation from the Kiwanis Club took place at the library on April 27.

"They paid for the bags, they paid for all the books in the bags," Ashby said. Kiwanis also recently donated money to facilitate bilingual Spanish/English books at the library.

"In the future they want to give us another grant for $500 for our open play area," Ashby said. The room offers a play area with toys, puzzles and puppets. "[Kiwanis previously] helped us with the expenditures for our open play area," she added.

"I'm extremely grateful to Kiwanis for doing this," Ashby said. "They really have a strong commitment to the youth of our community."
