Authorities identify Saturday drowning victim

Shenandoah County authorities have identified a 3-year-old boy who drowned Saturday night in Cedar Creek as Talmage Cedar Brock of Arlington.
The state Medical Examiner’s Office in Manassas identified the cause of death as accidental drowning in cold water.
Maj. Scott Proctor of the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office said search and rescue teams recovered the body about 200 yards downstream from a residence in the 7400 block of Zepp Road where the victim had been playing with some other children.
A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday at Walker Chapel United Methodist Church, 4102 Glebe Road, Arlington, with burial to follow at the church cemetery.
Proctor estimated the child went into the creek between 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
“The house, yard and the creek are adjacent to each other,” Proctor said. “The creek is about 50 feet away from the house. There were other children playing in the yard. Basically, he slipped into the creek unnoticed by others.”
Proctor said the scene attracted “well over” 100 volunteers who participated or were prepared to participate in the search that lasted from about 8 p.m. until just after midnight.
“We appreciate the outpouring of assistance,” he said.
Public service agencies deployed search teams along the creek banks and into the stream, he said.
One of the search teams along the bank spotted the body in the water and members of a swift water rescue team removed the victim from the water, Proctor said.
The rescue personnel included a helicopter and crew from the Fairfax Police Department and a tracking dog from the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, he said.
Law enforcement, firefighters and paramedics from Star Tannery, Toms Brook, Strasburg, the Virginia State Police and Fauquier and Shenandoah counties also participated in the search.
The drowning was the second time in less than a year someone lost his life after disappearing into a waterway in Shenandoah County. In the earlier incident, an 11-year-old boy discovered the body of a Manassas man who had gone for a swim in the Shenandoah River near a Woodstock residence on Labor Day weekend.
