New Market man arrested after burglary at plant

By Joe Beck

Shenandoah County sheriff's deputies arrested a New Market man Thursday and charged him with burglary and two other felonies after finding him after work hours in a plant where he used to work.

Maj. Scott Proctor said Kevin Paul Crosier, 36, 9563 Jackson Ave. Apartment A, New Market, was also charged with vehicle theft and vandalism involving the vehicle and a nearby residence.

Proctor said deputies went to the Howell Metal Co., 574 New Market Depot Road in New Market after receiving a report at 3:45 a.m. of a drunken man trespassing on the property.

Proctor said deputies found Crosier with the help of a plant employee.

"Of course, there was a strong odor of alcohol about his person, and he was unsteady on his feet," Proctor said of Crosier.

Proctor said deputies determined that Crosier had been trying to steal copper from inside the plant, but had not actually done so. The deputies also accused Crosier of earlier taking a 1993 Dodge Dakota pickup belonging to the company, driving it a short distance down New Market Depot Road and crashing it on private property.

"I believe he ran off the road and into a garden and damaged the yard and soil," Proctor said.

Proctor said it appeared that Crosier had walked back to the plant after the accident, which caused about $2,000 damage to the pickup. Proctor said alcohol appeared to have been a factor in the accident.

Proctor said Crosier was hospitalized for treatment of injuries he received in the crash.

"We had to guard him at the hospital for a short period, but he's back in custody in our jail," Proctor said.

Crosier was being held without bond as of Tuesday morning. He is scheduled to appear at 11 a.m. Friday in Shenandoah County General District Court.
