Front Royal police are searching for an 18-year-old town resident who escaped from custody as he was about to enter the jail around 3 p.m. Thursday.
Officer L.J. Waller said the suspect, Kristopher Tryshan Deal, ran away after he exited the police squad car. Waller said Deal fled from the jail at 8 E. Jackson St., across South Royal Avenue and was last seen fleeing south in an alley behind Jack Evans Chevrolet.
Waller said Deal had been arrested on two misdemeanor warrants and was handcuffed in the back seat of the squad car while being taken to the jail. Waller said Deal managed to slip off one of the handcuffs between the time he was arrested and when he emerged from the squad car at the jail. Waller said he was unaware Deal had slipped one of the cuffs until he made his escape.
"I opened the door, he exited the vehicle and while closing the door to my vehicle he turned around and asked me a question and took off running," Waller said of Deal.
Waller described Deal as 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing 160 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.
Waller said the misdemeanor warrants on which Deal was arrested involved juveniles. Waller said he couldn't elaborate on those alleged offenses.
Waller said Deal was unarmed at the time of his escape and has no fixed address in Front Royal.
"He stays from place to place," Waller said of Deal. "He has several friends in the area."
Anyone with information on Deal's whereabouts is asked to call the police department at 635-2111.
