Humane Society offers reward for information about dog mutilations

The severe mutilation of two American pit bull terriers on May 19 has led to a plea for information and a reward from The Humane Society of the United States.
The Humane Society has offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of those responsible for the attacks, one of which ended in an animal’s death, according to a report posted on the Humane Society’s website, www.humanesociety.org.
According to the report, around 6 a.m. on May 19, residents in Fort Valley reported finding a badly wounded dog lying on the side of the road near their home.
They transported the dog to Charlottesville for emergency treatment. The dog, now named Phoenix, was cut severely on the neck and abdomen, but survived. Phoenix is a young male, brown and white in color.
On the same day, around 10 a.m., a father and son fishing on Morgan Ford Bridge in Front Royal “followed a trail of blood and discovered a severely lacerated puppy lying by the creek,” the report said. “He was mutilated in a similar manner to the dog found in Fort Valley.”
The father and son took the dog to the Warren County Humane Society, where veterinarians brought him to Winchester for emergency treatment. The puppy’s injuries were so severe that he had to be euthanized, according to the report. The puppy was brown and white in color and about 5 months old.
According to sheriff’s offices in Shenandoah and Warren counties, the investigation is under way.
Warren County Sheriff Daniel T. McEathron said Friday evening his office received the Humane Society’s press release Thursday.
“We don’t have any information at this point,” he said. “We’re looking into what was going on.”
Anyone with information about either of the two attacks should call the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office at 540-459-6100 or the Warren County Sheriff’s Office at 540-635-4128.
