Shull resigns from Middletown council

Daily staff report

Middletown Town Council seeks to fill a vacancy made with a member's departure less that a year after her election.

Councilwoman Mary L. Shull tendered her resignation from the board effective May in a letter submitted to the town, clerk Rebecca Layman said Friday. Shull stated she needed to step down because she plans to move back to her hometown of Strasburg, Layman said.

Town Council hopes to fill the seat by June 15, Layman said. Town Attorney J. David Griffin filed a petition with the Frederick County Circuit Court asking a judge to schedule a special election to fill the council seat for the remaining time of the four-year term, Layman said.

Voters in the November election picked Shull and two other candidates, Councilman C.C. "Trip" Chewning III and Councilwoman Carole S. Snyder. Councilman Mark H. Davis did not win his bid for re-election to a second, four-year term.

Council earlier this year appointed Davis to the Planning Commission.
